Definition
Money a business has borrowed and must repay, usually with interest. Debt is reported as a liability — current if due within one year, long-term otherwise — and includes bank loans, notes payable, and bonds payable.
Example
A company borrows $200,000 from a bank: Debit Cash $200,000 / Credit Notes Payable $200,000. Each year it also records interest expense on the outstanding balance.
